In the "thinking things up" stage: yes. While wrestling with grammar and punctuation and editing out inappropriate humour: not so much. In fact, I find editing porn painful. ":-/ (Accidentally, that is exactly what I'm procrastinating right now. *facepalm*)
I normally avoid writing my own fantasies, because a) I don't want my f-list to be able to tell too exactly (I suppose that to a certain degree we all overshare by putting porn up on the net at all, but there's no need to make it too obvious) and, more importantly, b) my kinks aren't necessarily what would work for the characters. But I usually catch myself afterwards at having slipped something in. I think there has to be some detail in there that works for me personally, or the story as a whole doesn't. *shrugs*
(Also, I've read the popular writing advice that "Hand in pants does not good fiction make," but I doubt that's true. I'm here for the porn, after all, not high literature, which should indeed be written with your zipper closed, all joy banished from your life, and surrounded by grey wallpaper to achieve Highest Literary Merit TM.)
And if necessary, you just need a good beta to tell you that your Id is showing in the wrong places. Like when the typos start because you were typing one-handed. Which, again, I think is only problematic if it is out of character or breaks the flow of the story.
Also, speaking from a reader's perspective, I always hope the author had as much... fun writing as I had reading. I don't know, I just like the idea of shared getting off or something.
He, thanks for your additionally oversharing comment :))
Editing is never fun, no matter the content (and I'm techwriter and doing it for half a living), but the writing might be *G*
I read a quote of Tom of Finland last night, which actually got me started with the poll, that was like "if I don't get turned on while drawing, it's not good enough", so hands in pants isn't wrong for sexy contents IMVHO. The trick is to write it in a style that everyone can share :) And I love to read that you hope the author had fun *G*
i just had this whole discussion with a friend today who isn't into the slash kink. i mean, i think i like it for reasons other than to get off. i actually like the kink in general, from everything to incest between mccoy and joanna to genderbent kirk fucking himself to spock turning into a sexual demon, ect ect. it's a very sexually tense series if you ask me, and i love the fandom. seriously.
i don't usually write my own fantasies because then i feel like i'm inserting myself in a fics, and then i wouldn't be fufilling my voyeur fantasy which is my whole reason for loving the fandom LOL
I agree, I just love good kink a lot too. And a story can have great kink and still not turn me really on, and others just have one scene that works and *bang*** It's fun to read trek fanfic, I can tell ya (it's basically my only fandom *palms face*
i'm with you. there are few kinks that really turn me on, usually i read the stories because i like to read good writing. i was reading this one star trek fannovel by uh, hold on, karmen_ghia@yahoo.com, something done for the star trek orgasm awards or whatever lol, and i just like to read stories with sex. especially kinky sex.
vanilla sex just bores me now, i dunno about you LOL
Hehe, I answered the first two questions with "won't tell" because the other options applied even less for someone who reads but doesn't write stories with sex. ;-)
The D/s thing is a new kink for me. *cough* Reboot fandom does things to people.
TMI warning: About the other kinky ingredients, I have to say that various of these things turn me on in a sexual way whereas non-con/non-con aftereffects and the heavy h/c varieties turn me on in a physical but not sexual way. Unless it's sexual if you feel it in your arms and sometimes, your back. /TMI
I also can share my TMI. Because the best TMI is from a total stranger, right?
When I first started reading sexually explicit fic, it wasn't very personal. I was feeling around to find what I liked, and I loved slash, which was very divorced from my own sexual experiences. I wasn't really finding satisfaction in my real life, so it was more fun to escape into a fantasy that didn't have me in it at all.
Over time, everything has changed. I wrote my first fic recently. It was completely porn, and it was really informed by my personal experiences. As much as slash can be, that is. A lot of the stuff I find hot in erotic stories I've been able to bring into real life in some form, so now I feel free to go in the reverse direction.
Reboot fandom definitely has not been eating my sex life, that's for sure.
Thanks for sharing your TMI, I always love to hear those *G* (really!)
I'm glad I started with the pr0n writing when I already had a lot of experience, it made some things easier (I have mostly a language problem because writing elaborate, detailed sex scene is hard work in a second language *G*)
The sex bits I've read in your stories so far always have the ring of truth and experience to them, so I'm not surprised. But I am surprised that English is your second language. I've read a few of your stories and I didn't realize!
Most of the ST:XI stories I've read have very believable sexual mechanics as far as sex stories go. I wonder if this has changed over the history of porny fanfic, now that we all have the huge library of sex that is the internet at our fingertips. I still do feel that some authors bring their own touches that feel like personal experience. Maybe it's when they're very particular in their way of describing something, or when it's in a specialized area like specific kinky practices that I know enough about to recognize expertise in.
I have a running list of personal quirky sexual experiences that I want to include in a fic someday. Little things like the way something felt to me when I did it the first time, things that I've never heard described in the exact way I felt it. I've also started using my boyfriend as a resource for how things feel on a man's anatomy. I still feel like I'm bullshitting a bit when I describe how a man feels during sex, but I guess that's what writing is.
I have good betas - and well, I write mostly in English since 2002 so it should be good :)
Sex mechanics can be hard. Personal experience usually helps, though OTOH personal experience can also mean one filters ideas to one's own personal preferences. The trick is to keep them in tune with the characters and still do some research if needed.
My husband is a great source of information too *G* They are very useful, ain't they ;)?
Good luck with your writing :) Glad you showed up here.
Generally anything with a hyphen and the word "con" in the name (that's right, even Comic-Con) you can count me down for in fic. I don't know whether that's because I'm a sick puppy, or because of my natural tendencies when reading fic-- I like to know what's going on in my character's heads, and there's few more visceral situations than being, essentially, under torture. I don't know if it's a turn on for me (as I've proudly attested to NEVER EVER getting turned on) but it's certainly a kink. Stuff that's best described as "wonderfully screwed up" definitely elicits a physical reaction, but it's certainly not me finding it oh my gosh-sexy. Sometimes it's me feeling dizzy, or going around for the rest of the day with my head spinning because of a piece of fic read the night before.
I need to read more fic with silk shawls and pet names. I even need to write that. (Nero calling Mandana "cuddlebuggins", and all that.)
I think something that can get past the part of me that goes "teehee, sex, tune out now plz" and write a scene that's more than just sex is a very good something indeed.
I love doing polls and anything that invites me to overshare, so thank you! <3
You asked us to overshare, didn't you?

I love the raw emotional intensity of -con fic, so I guess we're on the same page here :) "Wonderful screwed-up", I like that too.
And I think it is brainy sexual if it makes your head spin in a good way *G*
Thanks for participating and for your feedback!
