No, he didn't die! If you stay to the end you can see him heading off to the market -- stuck to the cow's bottom, admittedly, but he'll get there!

Oh good! I wussed out, I skipped ahead when he kept getting hurt (I am the biggest wuss IN THE WORLD when it comes to animals being hurt, even cartoon animals) so I just stopped when the credits rolled. I'm glad he'll get there and hope he gets a carrot or something.
