Sounds like an interesting book: In The Game: Gay Athletes And The Cult Of Masculinity

There's also an excerpt about a hockey player available for your reading pleasure.

This statement there makes my trek bunnies jump:

“You just can’t escape the guys,” he tells me. “I mean, they will just walk into your hotel room, and they always want to go out drinking with you,” so it’s hard to have much privacy. “One time I had my boyfriend visiting me in the hotel room, and the coach knocked on my door and wanted to talk. So my boyfriend went and hid in the bathroom while the coach talked to me for an hour and a half.”

I want a Starfleet Academy K/Mc story *NOW* :P

McCoy's seven years ahead! Does the Academy go that long? (Unless you had him come back and act as a teaching assistant for chemistry or something ...)

But otherwise, yes, go write this. :D

Len would have to go through medical school before going to the academy or went through Starfleet medical training. These days, "In order to gain admittance to medical school, students usually pursue a four-year undergraduate degree at a college or a university, majoring in any subject they wish..." plus four years of medical school (according to wikipedia). So, Len would go through three or four years of university level study, medical school, and then have to do the intern/residency thing. So I think someone could realistically have Len and McCoy at the Academy at the same time. Though it would have to be AU, I think as I believe it was mentioned in the episodes that they met when Jim was recovering from an injury at some starbase.

AFAIR it's never established where they meet first - only in novels...

Oh. I thought the Academy was a clone of West Point, ie it IS the four-year undergraduate institution (that would come before all higher degrees).

I think there are stories at fanfic net or so where they meet at the academy, with McCoy already being a doctor and treating students or something...

Oh, that'd work. If he was dirt poor (socialist utopia of GR's notwithstanding) one could make it so he could only afford school on the kind of fellowship that requires that you "give back" to the school for N years. Or I suppose you could attach a med school to the campus and call him a resident. Or if not, still, SF is a big city and urban hospitals have lots of residents.

(Jadzia Dax said McCoy was at Ole Miss in the DS9 tribbles redux episode, but strictly speaking he could've just been visiting. For the gymnastics competition that she was judging. *snickers at mental images* I suppose he could've been a medic, but as he isn't trained in sports medicine, I'm going with the more amusing hypothesis that he was, in fact, competing.)

Aww, that would be cute. Who would be doing the hiding though (if you were to use that hockey scenario)? I think Bones is badass enough to shove Kirk into a bathroom and then just stand in front of the door, arms folded over his chest while he goes on about the intricacies of medicine for 4 hours with their uninvited guest.
