Politics in Reboot Verse

I'm still pondering the Balance of Terror and Romulan implications in the new timeline and would love to get more pointers to ongoing discussions of the theme (Federation/galactic politics in Reboot verse) or to stories that in your opinion deal with interesting points.
Also, feel free to speculate, offer suggestions, prompt with aspects you'd like to see, offer a story premise... whatever.
I feel like I'm one step away from pushing the Pike/Kirk/McCoy universe into the realms of fiction with a major plot (a la the Tarot Suite) but so far, the nature of this plot eludes me. I keep hitting the wall right now - Kirk and McCoy are on the Enterprise, and whatever they do there, it's embedded in the Star Trek Reboot context and I don't want to leave it out.
Romulans, Klingons, the Gorn, whatever - inspire my muses. Who are the strong civilizations and why? Will Vulcan and Romulus connect (Spock Prime, he!)? And what the heck was going on in the Laurentian system?
Anything you have in mind, punch it in the comments :)

And other menaces: 1) the Tholians are still out there, possibly expanding their territory. I think the Enterprise first encountered them, right? So in this 'verse, they don't know about them yet unless Spock Prime tells all. 2) the Kelvans! They're going to come in and scout for settlement territories and unless Spock Prime tells anyone, the Enterprise won't be present to deter them. That's not for some years, though... I think, for now Organians or Preservers or the usual Romulans and Klingons might be the best bet.

The Kelvans are a little strange. Not my taste, lol!
But hey, the Preservers are an interesting idea! They show up in several pro-novels... might dig around a little :)
Thanks for your input! It's fun to juggle possibilities.

Organians, stars that will go nova, endangered!Vulcans, Romulans in a position of superiority... intriguing stuff, and at least some of it has been nibbling on my brain since the movie. :D AUs are just so fascinating.

And I think I'll add serious plot later and have fun for this installment ;)
