Pike/Kirk/McCoy + X - meta

Because if I didn't write that meta, I'd have to write on Draws, you know ;)?
So I wrote this Pike/NumberOne/Kirk/McCoy foursome last night, and there's Draws with Dael as female character, and
illariy started musing about the differences and it made my thoughts run.
The similarities between No1 and Dael:
* Genetically, both are women. That's about the gist of their similarity at that point. See below for differences :)
* Both are more aligned with Pike. That mostly is caused by Kirk/McCoy being kind of joined-at-the-hip-glued-together in my mind. Jones is canon, right/right? *G*
* Both would need to go climbing with Jim. Kirk loves climbing. That's TOS canon (yeah, I know, Shatner inside, but the bike was IMHO totally a nod to TheShat too). So he loves climbing, the challenge in climbing, proving himself that he can do it. That's nothing McCoy or Pike would want to share, in my mind. Pike knows that he could do it (or at least, could've done when he was younger) and doesn't feel he's got to prove himself something there. McCoy mostly thinks of the damn height and how the fall would kill Jim. So whoever is the fourth in the foursome would most likely be roped (hehe) into climbing with Jim. And I can see both women do that.
The differences:
* Number One is a woman. Point. Despite people perhaps making jokes about her seemingly unemotional behavior and her dislike for typical female attire, she's a self-assured woman, happy with her body, and never wanted to be anything else. She's got the age to know what she wants - and gets it -, she's got her career, she knows her worth.
Dael is...not exactly sure what she wants to be. She's not classic transsexual aka "feels born in the wrong body" but she's got the feel that she can and has to design herself. She hasn't accomplished much in life yet and while she manages to put some distance between the past years and her current situation, her stability is still rather fragile.
* Number One isn't necessarily conventional in her sexuality, but she doesn't have a kink vibe for me. She knows what she wants and likes, and while she might do new things for a partner, it's not very high on her list.
Dael, OTOH, is actively experimenting because of that aspect of defining herself, so everything new she tries out forms her self-image a little.
* McCoy would have no problem with Number One. Sexy, grown-up woman, knows what she wants - that would IMO hit his buttons rather hard :) While Dael rings all the wrong bells for him and mostly makes him think of his psychology books, trauma victims 101.
OTOH, Jim would often feel treated like a kid by Number One, and he wouldn't really like that. They wouldn't always be on eye's level. While with Dael, they're closer together in age, have more points of connection from their backstory, and just work out.
The major difference for Draws would be that it would be a completely different series. Point.
Draws Pike starts in the first ficlet with a dubious gay club and dubious dub-con intervention on male students. I think if he were with Number One at that point, she'd so kick his ass ;)
Then Draws Pike is more of a lonesome wolf, and after the Narada, without the purpose of a ship, strongly loses his drive. With Number One there, he'd have recovered much more quickly in my opinion, but all on his own and keeping apart from friends, he has more problems.
Draws Pike with Number One would sadly end staying alone on Earth in my mind, because she has her career, loves said career, and he'd NEVER ever ask her to give it up for him or their relationship. They've got a great relationship between equals, but once they're not on the same ship anymore, that's exactly what makes it complicated, potentially long-distance with all the no-fun factors.
So while I regretted it at times that I made Draws Pike so very gay and Number One only a potential career of his friend Natasha - one that does not happen due to the Kelvin disaster - I could not have changed gears in the middle, and I'm very pleased with Dael because she brings elements of tension into the fic just by who she is and how young she is, not because she's bad or a genius or anything.
It's not a badgirl-goodgirl difference between Number One and Dael, it's just two very different women who fill different slots in the foursome, although it would be structurally the same pillar. And I hope that no matter who I write the three guys with, I'll make it worth your reading time.

Date: 2010-02-19 09:20 pm (UTC)It's quite close to what I perceived from the foursome ficlet, especially about Number One being more of a stable personality who knows what she wants and is sure of herself vs. Dael's sort of "unfinished&still-searching" feel. Hehe, the thoughts about Draws with Pike/Number One made me laugh a little &ndash you're right, I really can't see Kirk&/Number One hitting it off as he did with Dael. OTOH, in original Draws the impression I got is that Pike definitely senses Dael's vulnerability and "unfinished" nature and sometimes wants to protect her from others and gets jealous easier than he would with Number One. Which is interesting, I think, because a good number of people would want to protect Dael from her older and much more experienced lover, i.e. Pike himself! Now one of the questions is how Dael is going to evolve as she matures and how the foursome in general is going to work out. *anticipates*

Now trying to write something *G*

Date: 2010-02-20 05:51 pm (UTC)And Dael. You do not shy from the difficult. The issues of body identity and self-shaping don't change no matter how time progresses, I think.
I've been sort of dying to ask you if you wanted to beta my new chapter of Reverse Order but feeling silly at the same time. I'm feeling out the contours of what's going to happen between all three of them, still, and it's not going to be complex in the same ways as yours-- a threesome, not four, yadda yadda.
And yet. I want to do Number One justice.

Date: 2010-02-21 10:17 pm (UTC)Though I might be unable to look at it very critically, because I love your series so damn much /insert fangirlmode/ :) Oh, and I always saw the relationship as a four-person-construction, even if it may not be a foursome as in "all together".

Date: 2010-02-23 08:48 pm (UTC)I love seeing different takes on Pike and Number One and have no regrets about loving Draws even tho it's not my OTP, it's still feeding into my love for the characters, and I'm always interested in different authors' takes on the dynamics of relationships.
