There's one really bad thing about buying something in the US - the formats are different, so I always have problems with finding the right picture frames etc.

The greatest current problem is a large poster with 8 signatures (yum!), an expensive collectible that I wanted to hang up in a protected corner. Its size is 102 x 69 cm. The largest German standard frame is 100 x 70 cm. If I buy a frame that really, really fits to the poster size (including a passe-partout), it will cost me almost as much as the poster itself *palms face*

Therefore, a poll...

make my own frame by picking up the necessary materials and measuring it out. Or cutting off the bottom piece of the frame and adjusting it to make it longer and thus able to house the picture. Or seeing if I had a friend/acquaintance who would be willing to make me the frame in exchange for something I could do for them.

I say fold it. (As long as you're not planning to sell it later or something.)

I say make your own frame. You need some inexpensive pine boards, a piece of non-reflective plexiglass (or glass), and some backing. Also a saw and a mitre box, which you can likely borrow from someone.

I like the "make your own frame" idea, but I also wonder if there's nowhere to get a larger pre-made frame -- a neighbouring country, ordering online, a friend willing to sell you an old frame you can repaint?

If you absolutely can't get your hands on something that will work, I vote for 'fold the edges over, don't cut it'! Because the mere idea of taking scissors to something that expensive makes me cringe. :D

Or a starving art student! I bet they'd make you a frame on the cheap. :D There's also Freecycle.org -- check to see if there's a group in your area, because it's a great concept.

Make your own frame.
It would be such a pity to cut or fold it.
I'm sure you can find a DIY or arts supply shop selling what you need.

Just make sure it's not quite noticable.
