Meta stuff.

An article about the original content of "smarm" (link courtesy to
catalenamara in a meta discussion somewhere).
The article contains some valuable insights into gen people who still want a deep connection between the characters (including physical stuff, yes, I'm thinking of G.D. right now ;)
But this is IMO wrong: "People who are slash fans readily admit that they are fans of slash itself, not of any particular set of characters." My experience in fandom looks different. And this particular idea I heard more often from OTP fans who just can't get it why anyone would be into another slash pairing as they are....*slight sigh*

metafandom eats my life this morning. But the meeting is prepared...

Date: 2007-10-13 05:34 am (UTC)Well... half right? I *do* like slash for itself, I suspect. I'm likely, in any new fandom, to go searching for slash, to see what's out there.
On the other hand, there are pairings I just will not "see", i.e. Harry/Draco or, oh, Remus/Snape. Slash or not, it doesn't work for me. Yet I'm not an OTP-er, or at least not quite; HP/SS and HP/RL and even DM/NL or Luna/anybody all make me squee. (Today Sushi just demolished half my resistance to Snape/Lily, proving that I can't even keep my slash sacrosanct.)
I like slash; something in it calls to me, and I want to read/watch slashy books/shows/movies, and I want to read slashy stories about the characters I liked in said book/show/movie. But the characters get a say in it, too -- if I really just can't see that character as non-hetero/interested in the other character, all the slashfic in the world isn't going to bring me round. :D Ron Weasley is proof positive of this: I cannot read Ronslash because Ron is, in my head, the straightest character I have in my head.
